Chapter Fifteen

Bella, 875 AD

The monk just stared at me, eyes wide and jaw dangling.

What was the correct Old Irish word again? It was right there, on the tip of my tongue.

“No Lochlannaigh.” I shook my head violently as I finally remembered the right word. “Sacsanach.” Which meant we were from England.

Suddenly, a smile lit up his face. “Oh me stars, ye gave me a fright.”

Yeah, me too.

“You speak English?” I asked, gaping at him.

He nodded, scratching his beard. “A might better than ye speak Irish, caillech.”

I returned his smile at the Irish word for girl. “Yes, it seems so. Can you help us? We’re looking for books about time.” I lowered my voice on the last word.

Uncle James stepped up beside me and pulled a heavy-looking silver medallion from underneath his tunic.

Looks like Page and I weren’t the only ones who’d done a bit of research.

“I don’t suppose this helps.” He pointed to the Guardian symbol hanging around his neck.

“Yea, verily it doth, good sir.” The monk nodded. “There be a special section to the Clonmacnoise library that ye might want to take a gander at. Follow me.”

The monk led the way around the sanctuary to a side hallway that was even dimmer and cooler than the foyer entrance. He grabbed a candle from an arched alcove in the wall and led us to a flight of stone stairs leading upward.

On the next level, he made his way to a grand room with shelves lining all four walls and a few rustic wooden tables in the middle.

“Back here is the Guardian section.” He led us to the far corner, near a small window. “What ye be seeking perhap may be here.”

“Thank you, good sir.” I curtsied to the man as he left us alone in the library.

“How exactly are we going to find the right book if we don’t speak Irish?” Xander said from somewhere behind me.

One hand flew to my hip. “Didn’t you look at my notecards? We’ll look for books with the Irish word for time and portal in them.”

“Fine, but we’re going to be here all night.” He groaned and started perusing the shelves.”

We all turned to the stacks and stacks of books, dividing them amongst ourselves.

This was going to take longer than I’d hoped. Would we make it back in time for Lucinda’s rally in 1925?

Could you ever really be late for anything with a time travelling portal at your fingertips?

Maybe I was just stalling because I didn’t want to sit down and do the research.

With a groan, I moved to the far side of the room and picked a shelf to start systematically studying the books.

The sun’s angle through the window started to shift, which meant a few hours had passed as we searched through the ancient tomes.

Suddenly, a loud thump resounded somewhere behind me.

Clutching my Amethyst pendant, I whirled around to see a dark-haired man in a black hooded cloak filling the whole doorway.

“Are ye the folks lookin’ for books about time?” His deep voiced boomed.
